The IECA Canadian Regional Education Committee will be hosting an educational seminar on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Saltlik in Calgary. Doors will open at 2:30 pm MT, with the presentation beginning at 3:00 pm. Networking opportunities will follow the seminar, featuring Saltlik’s signature finger food and a selection of hosted drinks.
About the Session:
Over the past two years Alberta has embarked on a multi-phased engagement with industry stakeholders to advance a Restructured Energy Market (REM). Key design changes focused on reliability and affordability measures while also considering decarbonization by 2050 and reasonable implementation. Through extensive consultation with stakeholders, the AESO released its high-level design in August 2025 and is currently in the process of finalizing detailed rules. This session will highlight the REM’s key objectives, changes envisioned to the competitive market, anticipated timelines and what all this means to key stakeholders (market participants and Alberta residents).
Meet the Presenter:
Matthew Davis, Vice-President Regulatory, Policy & Government Relations (Canada), Capital Power Corporation
As Vice-President Regulatory, Policy & Government Relations (Canada) at Capital Power, Matthew Davis is responsible for the effective and efficient execution of our engagement strategy with federal and provincial governments, regulators, and other policy stakeholders. With over 18 years of experience, Matthew has developed forecasting models and strategic analytics for Alberta’s wholesale electricity market and participated in numerous policy and regulatory engagements including: the AESO’s REM and capacity market designs, transmission developments and tariff design, provincial off-coal negotiations, and carbon, renewable and net-zero policies. Mr. Davis holds both a MSc and BSc in Statistics from the University of Calgary, and a PGDip (Honors) from the University of Otago.
