Merchant Taylors' Hall

In 1327 King Edward III's Royal Charter established the Fraternity of Tailors and Linen Armourers, later known as The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors'. In 1503 Henny VII first recognized the Guild by the name of Merchant Taylors'. The Great Hall was built during the 14th century and the property has been the home of the Livery Company since 1347. In 1666 the Hall was gutted in the Great Fire of London but both the library, and its books, survived. Merchant Taylors' is one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies in the City of London from which all Lord Mayors have been chosen. Over its history, Merchant Taylors' has evolved from a medieval Guild responsible for the tailoring trade, to a society of global merchants, and finally to an association with an educational and charitable focus.
