Description

About

The presentation will triangulate through the electric industry’s transformation from hundreds of unique balancing authorities into seven major ISO/RTOs. The remaining individual balancing authority areas of WECC and SERC will also be considered. The presentation will then seek to describe possible paths forward over the next five years as we begin the active pursuit of co-optimizing carbon and energy in a very physical sense.

Objectives

  • This short presentation is designed to enable the attendee to follow the extreme rise in market and grid operations complexity from 1997 to 2022. The attendee should also leave with a current understanding of the oncoming integration between the transmission and distribution systems. One example is the attendee will be challenged to consider the current movement to bring distributed energy resources (DERs) interconnected to the distribution systems into the centralized wholesale markets run by the ISO/RTOs.
