Thomas (tam) brownrigg markley
Thomas (Tam) Brownrigg Markley, 58, beloved husband, father, brother and friend died August 27, 2008. Tam was born in Beaumont, Texas on December 6, 1949 to Joseph and Margaret Markley. He graduated from Lamar University and moved to Houston where he began a 30 year career in the energy industry, including 20 years as Controller of Calcasieu Refining and most recently as Director of Finance for Xeron, Inc. Tam was former President and long-time Board Member of the International Energy Credit Association, and served as accountant for West Harris County MUD #6 for over 20 years. Tam enjoyed many valued friendships from both of these associations. In April 2004, Tam joined the Mankind Project/New Warriors and continued to meet weekly with his warrior brothers with whom he shared profound growth and friendship. Throughout every area of his life, Tam succeeded in building fellowship and community. Tam loved his family, nature, travel, hiking and gardening. He had a unique creativity and enthusiasm which he expressed in every aspect of life from landscaping and home design projects to creating a well-crafted Excel spreadsheet. Most of all he enjoyed nurturing his relationships with family and friends who treasured his playful sense of humor, big smile and ready laugh. He will be dearly missed and never forgotten. Survivors include wife Peggy Markley, children Tanner Markley of Austin, Megan Markley of St Louis, MO, stepdaughter Alice Broussard of Berkeley, CA; sisters Mary Newman and Annie Hilliard, both of Austin; mother Peggy Collins, Lafayette, LA; mother-in-law Jane Turner of Houston; and beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Preceded in death by father Joseph Markley and sister Conner Adams. A memorial service is planned for Saturday September 13th 1pm, at Bering Memorial United Methodist Church, 1440 Harold, Houston, Texas 77006, with reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Sierra Club, Mankind Project Houston, or charity of choice.
IECA 84th annual fall conference
We hope you will be able to join us at this year’s 84th Annual Fall Conference. The Conference Management Committee and the various Credit Group Committees have put together a high quality, value-added educational program. With our membership now at a record high of over 1,300 plus members, we should be able to establish a new record attendance for a Fall Conference. We will once again host a Trade show which has been extremely popular for both the vendors that support our industry, along with our membership. This forum will provide valuable insights and enhance technology awareness and understanding of the various credit services, tools, and innovative products that are available to our membership. S.J. 'Bud' haider memorial Scholarship (held over until july 10, 2008)
The Scholarship Committee of the IECA is once again pleased to announce the continuation of the S. J. “Bud” Haider Memorial Scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. The Scholarship Committee will award up to seven scholarships of $2,000 U.S. Dollars each. The top applicant will be designated as the Jerry F. Dean winner of the Bud Haider Scholarships, and will be awarded an additional $500 of scholarship money. Each scholarship will be awarded for a one-year period only. Students must reapply each year to be considered for future scholarships.
To be eligible for a scholarship, the applicant must be a child or grandchild of an Active Member (Regular or Allied) or Honorary Member, who has been a Member of IECA for at least one year prior to June 1, 2008 and qualified according to your completed application information. The Application consists of three sections. Section One describes the personal information to be submitted. Section Two describes the academic information to be supplied. Section Three describes the précis response to be included with the application.
Scholarships will be awarded according to the Scholarship Committee’s selection based upon the merits of each application received. Only the Chair/Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee will see Section One of the Application. The Chair/Co-Chair will delete the applicant’s name from Sections Two and Three, as well as from any enclosures, before distributing the applications to the Committee. Committee members will work independently to evaluate each application, having no knowledge of the applicant’s identity. The Chair/Co-Chair will tally the assessments of the Committee, but will not cast a vote.
Completed applications must be mailed directly to Shelley Jones, Calpine Corporation, 717 Texas Avenue, Suite 1000, Houston, Texas 77002. The completed application (including all specified enclosures) must be received by Mrs. Jones, the Scholarship Committee Chairperson, no later than Friday, July 10, 2008 to be considered.
Scholarship will be awarded by the first week of August, 2008.

iECA asian Education conference
We were sorry to lose Magdalene Lim of Statoil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd who moved to another position outside of credit and stepped down from the Asia Committee in March this year.However we welcome her successor Oivind Heuer of StatoilHydro ASA, an existing member and long time supporter of the IECA in Europe.We are sure that Oivind will make a significant contribution to the Asia Committee.
Following the successful networking events in April and November last year the Asian group held the inaugural Educational Seminar at the Singapore Marriott on the 17th April 2008. Around 70 people attended the event with an evenly balanced representation from the energy companies and bankers.
Following my address, Asif Raza of JP Morgan Chase, Chairman of the Asia Committee welcomed delegates to the first one day educational seminar,and introduced members of the Asia Committee. As a small token of our thanks, a bouquet of flowers was presented on behalf of the IECA to Cecilia Yeo of JP Morgan Chase who was instrumental in helping organise the event and whose contribution ensured things ran smoothly and efficiently on the day.
Speakers included Tim Condon, Managing Director & Chief Economist Asia, of ING Bank N.V., Singapore whose presentation addressed the credit crisis and liquidity squeeze, how bad things will get in the US, the spread to Europe and the effect on the Asian economies. Christopher Neidow, Executive Director & Head of Energy Marketing, Asia for JP Morgan, Singapore followed with a presentation on hedging in the energy industry highlighting new developments in energy hedging, new structures to mitigate credit risk and liquidity for short and long term contracts. Stephen Del Regno. MD Asia Region Gas Commercialisation of Chevron Global Gas in Tokyo then gave an overview of the LNG market, highlighting the global supply and demand position, identifying the key market players, the supply value chain and infrastructure, and the challenges facing the LNG business in today's competitive market.
Charles Williams, Partner in law firm Thomas Cooper, London paired up with Toh Kian Sing SC, Partner in Rajah & Tann, Singapore to talk about shipping contracts and risks in oil trades. Charles, a long time supporter and regular speaker in Europe, talked about the types of Charterparty and the Owner/Charterer's obligations, contractual remedies and inter-action with the sales contract and Bill of Lading before addressing the performance risk, the ability of the vessel to complete the voyage and the solvency of the Owners, and the legal risk involved. Toh Kian Sing went on to talk about the prime shipping document, the Bill of Lading, it's function, endorsement of the Bill and title to sue under it. He then went on to explain the practice of 'switching' Bills of Lading and the pitfalls associated with it, before talking about the Letter of Indemnity being used in lieu of the Bill of Lading for delivery of a cargo.
The final presentation of the day came from Bruno Plaskow, Senior Business Consultant with Financial Objects PLC, London and long standing member of the European Committee who addressed credit risk in an energy portfolio, giving delegates an overview of basic terms and trade types, before discussing standard enabling agreements versus bilateral contracts, the credit process and leading on to credit portfolio analysis and a case study in credit portfolio management.
